I am about to start my final semester in my grad school program at UT Dallas (emerging media master’s degree program), and part of this final semester is to make a capstone project.
I’m going to produce a documentary (video) piece about creative culture, and the “bubble” between professional people and their serious side projects. Do you know someone who does a regular-type of day job, but has a serious hobby on the side? It could be a money-producer or a non-money-producer. Given the choice, though, I would like to focus on people who do make a little extra money on the side with their creative side projects. Oh, and I’m looking for people who live in the DFW area.

What sort of commitment would this require from a person like you?
- 3 interviews (short, run-n-gun style, 10 minutes each) over a few months
- Me shooting video of you doing what you do (regular job / hobby)
- Day-to-day stuff (for filler footage)
- Subject-shot footage, using a hand-held flip-type camera (that I will provide), that shows you doing what you do for work/hobby, as well as shooting some completely random things, things that inspire you, a conversation, anything goes!
What’s in it for you?
- After editing, I will offer all footage (with your permission, of course) free for download and re-edit.
- I will also teach you (those of you who are interested) how to use JayCut, a free online video editor, so you can re-use the footage we all shoot… so you can promote yourself.
When does this project start?
I’m just starting now, actually! I’ll probably start meeting with people just after the 2010 holiday season ends.
Let me know if you are interested, and feel free to forward this URL to friends who you think might be interested in helping!
Sincerely,
Ben
Hey, I found you (and then this) via the Dallas makers space meetup page.
Anyway, I’m very much trying to turn a side hobby “passion” into something that could eventually replace my day job. I’d love to chat about it!
Hi, Ben.
A friend forwarded me your info about your bubble project. I currently work as an industrial designer at Texas Instruments, but I also have a “serious photography hobby” on the side doing custom family/kids/newborn/travel/engagement photography.
Not sure if you’re still looking for candidates for your project, but if so, I’d be happy to discuss this in more detail with you.
Take care.
Matt
I would be very interested in talking to you about your project. I am a preK – 8th grade Integrated Dram Instructor at a private school in Dallas. I have recently opened a new theatre in Fair Park. We host late night comedy, mainstage shows, reading series, and music events. It is all a labor of love for not only me but my wife, kids, and extended family. Let me know if you are interested.
Hello Ben,
I would love to write an article about this for the UTD Mercury.
I have sent you an email on your zmail email
Hope to hear from you soon!
