So Erin and I adopted a dog from Operation Kindness and he is a lovely little devil. And up to this point, we have left our fence in its current state. Because we did not require a completely gated-in back yard, we left it open on one side. And it has been great… up to this point. Now that our new family member Marvin is getting a little bit older, he is going to grow in size as well as curiosity. And that means that it is time to build a gate.
The plan is to build a gate along our sidewalk close to the edge of the front of the house. We will do the horizontal picket style as before for consistency’s sake (duh). Since I’m a dork, I took some measurements and made a rough draft in Sketch. I think I measured correctly (famous last words?) so things are close enough to scale for an accurate estimate.
One of the challenges that we will face is anchoring the fence posts in to the concrete sidewalk. For consistency’s sake, I opted on using wood fence posts. One obvious solution is to just put holes in the concrete and anchor posts in the old fashioned way. However, I don’t want to mess with all that drilling and chipping away of concrete. So I found some Titan post anchors that function as an anchor, a base plate, and a riser to keep wood off of the ground (for longer rot resistance). I’ll increase the support of the fence post with a small brace after we finish the build.
Stay tuned for build day. The post anchor hardware is on a slow boat from an Amazon partner, so we’re going to have to wait a couple of weeks to get started.
